BROUILLY
2017 Brouilly by Alex Foillard
Fig Balsamic, with a touch of liquorice on the nose. Deep garnet purple and rich in the glass. Stunning sharp acidity up front, followed by a firm red fruit palate accented by cinnamon spice. Minerals and anise round out the finish.
Food match: Whilst sitting in a restaurant, we were looking for a wine that would pair beautifully with pork belly, roasted cauliflower and also beetroot. Our original thoughts were for a gamay, and after engaging with the sommelier, this was the perfect choice.
This wine is certainly a modern take on a classic. Some ageing in concrete, and some carbonic maceration elevates this wine from a traditional region. The sharp acidity upfront might not be for everyone, but this will fade with time in bottle.
